Root Cause Analysis

Splunk

Your Search Head Cluster keeps crashing with Out-of-Memory errors. You revoke access for the user who ran the search, things calm down, and three days later it happens all over again, this time with a different user.

Technical teams, SOC and NOC analysts, and ops teams know the drill: hours of digging, chasing the root cause, and plenty of educated guesses.

That’s where Lynx AI comes in. Available to Splunk customers in Israel exclusively through Peax Data, the agent lets you ask your data questions in plain language and get evidence-based answers in minutes.

Below are two recent cases from the field. In each, Peax Data’s Professional Services team tackled a critical issue at a defense customer remotely, using Lynx AI deployed in the customer’s own Splunk environment.

Case 1: The Mystery of the Recurring OOM Crashes in Splunk ES

At a defense customer, a user was working in the incident management view in Splunk Enterprise Security. Behind the scenes, that view fired off a heavy search thousands of times in a short window, and the Search Head Cluster (the servers that run every search in the organization) went down again and again with Out-of-Memory errors. Each crash took monitoring offline, left the team unable to search or investigate incidents, and locked users out of the system. Temporarily revoking the user’s ES permissions stabilized things, but three days later the problem was back, this time with a different user.

Bar Ronen, Team Lead on the division’s Professional Services team, took charge remotely. To get to the root cause fast, he put Lynx AI to work on the data, and the agent surfaced some surprising findings:

A 30-second refresh cycle

The queue of incidents awaiting analyst review (ES Analyst Queue) was refreshing itself every 30 seconds.

Heavy queries on every refresh

Each refresh pulled in resource-intensive SPL queries packed with lookups, dedup commands, and complex macros.

Load that had been building for weeks

For more than three weeks, the incident management view was being hit tens of thousands of times a day, peaking at over 200,000 hits in a single day.

Beyond pinpointing the root cause, Lynx AI delivered clear, actionable recommendations:

  • Increase the incident queue’s auto-refresh interval from the 30-second default to 5 minutes.
  • Optimize the heavy queries that run with every refresh.
  • Set a limit in limits.conf on how many searches can run, and only then restore the user’s permissions.
  • Set up an alert that tracks how often the problematic search runs, so the team can catch the pattern before it takes the system down.
  • Build a NOC status dashboard that shows load on the environment in real time.

To round things out, our experts capped Splunk’s memory usage at 95% of server memory, so the server itself stays up even under extreme load.

Case 2: An Automation That Wouldn't Fire, and the Single Prompt That Fixed It

Another defense customer set up a new Automation Rule to run Playbooks through Splunk. Everything showed green, but the automation simply wouldn’t run. A 20-minute phone call got nowhere: without direct access to the environment, pinning down the source of the problem is extremely difficult.

Ido Aviv from our PS team started by laying the groundwork. He explained to Lynx AI, in plain language, how the system works and how its components fit together. Building on that, he crafted a targeted diagnostic prompt in the Lynx AI cloud environment and sent it to the customer. The customer ran it on the Lynx AI instance installed in their environment, and the agent zeroed in on the cause: a step the Playbook relies on hadn’t finished before the automation tried to trigger it, so the run stalled while the system kept reporting that all was well. From there, the agent walked the team through the fix step by step until the automation was up and running.

Twenty minutes on the phone couldn’t find the issue. One run of the prompt pointed right to it, and it was fixed on the spot. The prompt has since taken on a life of its own: it’s now a go-to tool for the team, used to troubleshoot other automations, confirm that steps run in the right order, and flag any break in that sequence so the same issue doesn’t resurface.

"Every investigation I ran through the prompt saved several hours of work. For us on the PS team, it's a huge efficiency boost, and it lets us deliver more to customers in less time."

The Takeaway

In both cases, Lynx AI pinpointed the source of the problem, guided the team to a fix that stabilized the environment, and left monitoring in place to catch the next issue early. Investigations that used to take hours now take minutes. Throughout, our experts were the ones calling the shots: they knew which questions to ask, how to walk the agent through the system, and what to do with the answers. Best of all, the next incident, the one already brewing, never happened.

About the Solution

Peax Data, the data division of Peax, has partnered exclusively with Israeli AI company Lynx AI to deliver an Agentic AI layer for the Splunk platform. It enables data analysis and root cause investigation by generating tailored, complex queries from natural language (Text-to-SPL), builds dashboards automatically, and significantly reduces false positives.

It’s built for organizations where security is non-negotiable, like the customers in these two cases: full deployment in on-premises and air-gapped environments, existing role-based access controls (RBAC) fully preserved, and a Zero Data Retention architecture.
